Elementary
Montessori elementary builds on the self-directed, hands-on learning of our lower school. Children make choices while trained teachers guide with age-appropriate lessons. They explore a concept over time using many materials for math and language arts, and they research topics to share. The curriculum includes history, geography, sciences, and cosmic education.
What this looks like in practice
In an elementary room, you see children at tables and on the floor, each with work they chose and can explain. Teachers give lessons to one child or a small group, then move between them, watching and taking notes. A math material drawn out over several days looks quiet, almost still. It is the work of one idea, held long enough to be understood.
What parents tend to notice is the talking. A child comes home able to say what they are studying and why it interested them. They look things up on their own, sometimes past the question that started it. They also begin to weigh fairness, in the classroom and at home, and to carry their own work from plan to finish without being pushed.
